Handel's

Messiah

CONDUCTED BY DR. KAREN GARDIAS

DECEMBER 21, 2019

7:00pm-9:00pm

Enjoy the glories of Handel's Messiah in the comforts of the Brunelle Theater, all while supporting the Davis High School Music departments! Every other year, Dr. Gardias and DHS orchestra conductor Mr. Moreno bring together Handel's Messiah as a fundraiser for their respective music departments. The Davis Madrigals and Advanced Treble Choir both perform, and for the very first time DHS Jazz Choir will be involed as well! The Davis High School choirs and Davis Baroque Ensemble work extensively to perform for the Davis community, and would absolutely appreciate your support!

WHAT IS HANDEL'S MESSIAH?

Messiah – It is one of the most famous and widely shared pieces of music in history. Beethoven cited Handel with his Messiah as the greatest composer that ever lived. As program notes state, he finished Messiah in 24 days, never leaving his home during that time in 1741.  It is part of a 3 section work, divided into the birth, death and resurrection of Christ.  We are only singing the first section. NPR music commentator Miles Hoffman estimated that there are roughly a quarter of a million notes in Messiah. At a little more than three weeks of 10-hour days, Hoffman said that means Handel would have had to keep a continuous pace writing 15 notes a minute.

It was premiered in Dublin in 1742.  It was so popular that audience members were advised to leave their hoop skirts and swords at home when it became clear that Messiah’s premier would be overcrowded. Mozart re-orchestrated Messiah in 1789 and gave it a more modern sound by Classical orchestra standards. He humbly wrote that any alterations he made should not be seen as an effort at improvement. King George II was so moved by Messiah, he initiated the tradition of having the audience stand during the Hallelujah Chorus. Handel did not want credit for Messiah and wrote the letter SDG instead of his initials.  Handel wrote – soli deo Gloria –to God alone the glory.
